Track snow leopards, wolves and bears with mountain rangers from a remote camp in the Tian Shan mountains

Gain access to a remote protected area usually reserved for scientists and researchers. Alongside our expert mountain rangers, you will venture by 4x4, horseback, and on foot to track and spot one the planet’s most elusive apex predator: the snow leopard.

With a small team of no more than 8 guests, and at one of the best times of year to spot sow leopards, you’ll experience true Kyrgyz mountain culture, learn to track and spot different mountain species, and contribute significantly to the preservation of this wild space: one of the last true strongholds of the snow leopard. You won’t find an expedition like this anywhere else.

Be absorbed by Kyrgyzstan’s wild heart

On our specially tailored 10-day expedition, you’ll work with local park rangers to travel to a unique camp location in a remote and pristine nature reserve. As you explore, you’ll experience the vastness of this isolated and rarely visited part of Kyrgyzstan by trekking, horse riding and driving off-road as we learn to track and spot iconic wildlife like snow leopards, bears and wolves.

You’ll be far from the luxuries of city life, journeying by horseback over tough terrain and experiencing cool alpine temperatures. No previous experience is required, but a mindset to adventure and explore is recommended. You’ll be well looked after by our expert team who have years of experience in the region.

Itinerary

Live side-by-side with reserve rangers in our off-grid base camp.

Day 01
Arrivals

Settle into your comfortable hotel in Bishkek amongst the hustle and bustle of the city. Explore the city sights on your doorstep or relax ahead of our adventure. Airport transfers to your hotel will be provided. You will be able to check into your hotel from around 2pm. We’ll meet as a team for dinner in the evening where we’ll discuss the expedition ahead of us. From this point, all your food, accommodation and logistics are arranged for you by our expert team.

To protect wildlife and maintain the pristine nature of our camp location, precise locations remain undisclosed until this point.

Day 02
To the mountains

Leave the bustle of Bishkek behind as we drive along the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul. We’ll stop to explore the red-rock sculptures of Fairy Tale Canyon and grab a local lunch before arriving at our hotel in the foothills of the Tian Shan mountain range. This quiet, authentic town is the perfect staging point—a chance to breathe the mountain air and prepare for the off-road adventure ahead. Accommodation is in a basic, but comfortable Kyrgyz-owned hotel along the shores of Issyk-Kul.

Day 03
Into the wilderness

Today we’ll travel deep into the Tian-Shan range by 4x4, meandering through ancient glacial valleys and over 4,000m mountain passes. We’ll negotiate river crossings and cool alpine temperatures along the way to reach our campsite deep in the Tian Shan.

After arriving at our isolated base camp you’ll settle into your new home for the week and meet your local ranger team. You’ll be sleeping in your own winter-grade tent with access to a communal heated yurt where we’ll dine and share stories as a team. In the early evening we’ll begin searching for wildlife and you’ll be trained in how to use specialist spotting equipment in preparation for the week ahead.

In the evening we’ll enjoy the communal heated yurt for the first time and dine on traditional Kyrgyz food.

Day 04

“Horses are the wings of the Kyrgyz”
– Nomadic proverb

Wake up on your first morning to crisp air, stunning scenery and the silence of the mountains.

Now you’ve met the full expedition team, we’ll start exploring the area in search of wildlife and adventure. With most areas only accessible by horseback, today you’ll be introduced to your steed for the week.

The Kyrgyz have a long history of horsemanship and are expert riders. You will learn from the best and have the opportunity to saddle and care for your horse during the expedition. No previous riding experience is necessary and safety equipment is provided.

You’ll begin to learn more about snow leopards, their behaviour and the critical conservation work being done in Kyrgyzstan to protect their habitats and grow their fragile numbers. You’ll learn from our camera trap specialists as you place your own in key snow leopards locations surrounding our camp. All the data collected will be added to our ongoing long-term study of specie populations and distribution.

Days 05 – 08
In search of the ghost of the mountain

You'll be working with rangers to track, spot and identify wildlife. You’re in prime snow leopard territory here. You’ll experience all the mountains have to offer. Riding by horseback down ancient valleys, hiking up to isolated mountainous ridges and spotting snow leopards with local rangers who have spent their lives in the mountains.

Our guests are always surprised by the amount of wildlife that can survive in such a harsh environment. During the expedition you will have a very high chance of seeing wolves, Himalayan vultures, golden eagles, argali and ibex. You have a good chance of seeing the Tian Shan brown bear and snow leopards (more on snow leopards specifically in our FAQs).

You’ll be well looked after by our capable local team, but a mindset for adventure is recommended.

Day 09‍
 ‍
A journey to Lake Issyk-Kul

We’ll say farewell to our local ranger team who have welcomed you to their home and shown you all that the mountains have to offer. Trading saddles for 4×4s, brace for a rugged overland journey as we travel over 4,000m passes and navigate winding glacial valleys. Descending to the vast shores of Lake Issyk-Kul, we’ll check into a locally owned hotel. Here, you can finally enjoy a hot shower before spending the evening trading stories of the wild over a well-earned drink.

Day 10

Master of the sky and farewells

On our final day of the expedition we will stop for a private demonstration by a traditional Kyrgyz Eagle Hunter, exploring the complex, historic relationship between nomadic communities and apex avian predators.

Following which we will return to Bishkek where you will have a night in a hotel provided (note dinner not included). You can fly anytime after 10pm on this day, but most guests choose to fly the following day in case of delays. Airport transfers are provided.
